- YouTube Premium lite has now been completely implemented in the US.
- It allows you to see “the majority” ads of the videos for $ 7.99 per month
- YouTube says that it will expand its pilot to more countries “this year”
Here are some good news if you are tired of the increasingly long YouTube ads: a new Lite Plan of YouTube Premium has now been completely implemented in the United States, after some successful pilot tests.
The new Plan costs $ 7.99 per month, compared to $ 13.99 per month for the complete YouTube premium. The key difference between the two is music, while a Premium Lite plan allows you to see “most” videos without ads, including anything related to “games, comedy, kitchen or learning”, which does not apply to musical videos.
Three characteristics are also lost compared to a complete premium plan. There is no outside or background video playback with the Lite plan, and you don’t get full access to YouTube music. In other words, YouTube Premium Lite is aimed at those who are already registered in one of the other best music transmission services, but still want (mostly) YouTube videos without ads.
In Premium Lite, YouTube says that ads “can appear in musical content, shorts, and when you look for or navigate”, so it is not a completely free experience of ads such as its most expensive premium alternative. But if you use mainly subscriptions to guide your visualization and do not see many musical videos, it could be worth the price.
If that sounds in its street, it is possible that Premium Lite is asked is being implemented worldwide. Well, YouTube says that “in the coming weeks” it will launch Premium Lite in its other pilot countries, which are Thailand, Germany and Australia. He added that he will bring the plan in new pilots to “additional countries this year”, but has not specified exactly when.
How do you compare?
As someone who looks a lot of YouTube for free, but also lives sadly in the United Kingdom, this YouTube Subscription Lite seems obvious to me.
I am a Spotify subscriber for a long time, so I don’t really need YouTube music and I rarely watch musical videos on YouTube. I also see YouTube based on my subscribed channels, and although the ability to download videos and reproduce them at the bottom of my phone would be good, that is not a decisive factor either.
The main driver for me is that I am approaching my limit with the increasingly long advertising breaks of YouTube, so I would definitely record me for Premium Lite if it were available in the United Kingdom.
It is another transmission subscription to add to the list, so I am increasingly using the practice of the subscription jump for the best transmission services. But YouTube is now a sufficiently significant part of my diet to watch television that could justify the $ 7.99 per month (or whatever the equivalent) for the Lite Plan.
One thing that is not yet clear is how easy it is to change from a YouTube Premium Plan existing to the cheapest Premium Lite. Two of my colleagues in Techradar have verified to see if there is an option to change, but so far they are not seeing anything in the subscription management. I have reviewed with YouTube in the process and I will update this story if we receive news.
