- The popular IKEA Varmblixt smart lamp has appeared in stores
- It features frosted glass, changing colors, and smart home compatibility.
- It is scheduled for release in April, but some buyers have already found it.
IKEA’s donut-shaped Varmblixt smart lamp was a surprise highlight of this year’s CES tech show, and while the company said it would have its official launch in April, it looks like some stores have gotten ahead of themselves and started stocking their shelves early. The lamp also appeared on IKEA’s Swedish website, where it’s described as “a magical, eye-catching sight,” and we’re inclined to agree.
The lamp is an updated version of the original Varmblixt LED lamp, which launched in 2022. The classic lamp has a bright orange finish to fill your room with a warm glow, but it’s now had a makeover with softly changing pastel colors, a frosted finish, and Matter compatibility so you can integrate it with your smart home.
TechRadar Editor-at-Large Lance Ulanoff got the new lamp on the show floor and couldn’t stop thinking about it afterwards.
“With each press of the remote, I watched the color change almost imperceptibly, then slowly transition to the new, fully dimmable shade,” he wrote after experiencing it in person. “Not only that, but the diffusion of color under the molded glass is almost perfect. It’s just beautiful to look at and I loved enjoying the shine.”
She imagined having one, calling it a “marriage of color and shape,” and it seems the dream is not far away. As German site Notebookcheck reports, some buyers have already seen the redesigned lamp in their local stores and have posted photographic evidence to prove it.

Like its predecessor, the new Varmblixt is a collaboration with Dutch artist and designer Sabine Marcelis, known for her use of pastel colors, light and geometric shapes.
Unlike most smart lights, which allow you to choose any color on the spectrum, the Varmblixt lamp switches between a limited palette of shades carefully selected by Marcellis to complement its shape. You can smoothly move between these colors using a remote control or connect it to the IKEA app to open a wider selection of 40 shades, but that’s completely optional.
“Most people won’t buy this updated Varmblixt because they want a smart device, but because it’s a beautiful lamp, where you can change the atmosphere of a room with the push of a button,” David Granath, lighting and home electronics manager at IKEA of Sweden, told TechRadar in an exclusive interview last month.
The lamp has yet to be seen outside of continental Europe, but we’ll certainly keep our eyes open next time we browse the shelves. It’s listed for 699 kroner on the Swedish IKEA site and will cost $99 in the US, so we’ll be tempted to buy more than one.
