This isn’t the first time we’ve gotten more than a sneak peek at the DC Universe (DCU), which will hit theaters on June 26. supergirlThe first trailer was unveiled last December, but the next round of footage from the upcoming film should give the general public a clearer idea of what its plot entails.
Article continues below.
DC fans won’t need another trailer to give them an idea of its story, mind you, because the second DCU Chapter One movie looks like it will be a near-perfect adaptation of Supergirl: the woman of tomorrowalso known as the graphic novel by Tom King and Bilquis Eveley.
And when I say “almost perfect,” I mean it. This is because some new information about supergirlThe cast and plot recently came to light, which, if you’re anything like me, will excite and confuse you in equal measure.
What have we learned recently about the story and cast of Supergirl?
Major spoilers follow Supergirl: the woman of tomorrow. You have been warned.
On the one hand, David Corenswet Superman willpower appear in supergirl. In the trailer above, Clark Kent/Kal-El can be seen trying to contact his Kryptonian cousin via video call. However, it’s clear that Supergirl, whose real name is Kara Zor-El, doesn’t want to be bothered.
There have been rumors that Corenswet would reprise his role as the Man of Steel in one of the most exciting new movies of 2026, but this is the first official confirmation we’ve gotten that he will do so. Since Alcock’s tormented metahuman made a crowd-pleasing cameo last year Superman movie, it’s fun to see Corenswet return the favor.
That said, while Supes’ appearance in supergirl will help build the connective tissue between DCU’s various projects, it’s a surprise to see him involved. Superman does not appear in Woman of tomorrowso its presence, although welcome, may perplex anyone who has read Woman of tomorrow.
Creative liberties have been taken elsewhere as well.
In a previous Entertainment Weekly (EW) article, director Craig Gillespie reconfirmed that the flashbacks, shown in the film’s first trailer, will cover Kara’s time on Krypton and in her hometown of Argo. Part of his backstory was part of Woman of tomorrowThe plot, but it seems that it will be developed in more detail in supergirl.
In fact, TV ads have already highlighted that we’ll see how Kara and her rambunctious dog Krypto met. Add in a possible Krypton-based appearance by Supes, a closer examination of his relationships with his parents (EW confirms that David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham will play his father and mother), and the destruction of Krypton, and these flashbacks will take up a good amount of screen time. I’m also not against these inclusions, especially if they serve the plot and give the general public a better idea of why Kara is the way she is.
that ugly, edgy krem image is instantly one star less for me.pic.twitter.com/DULrhRYFn2 https://t.co/KlCABR4ujcMarch 30, 2026
Then there is supergirlThe wildly different version of Krem, also known as the Big Bad of the movie. You can read more about the character played by Matthias Schoenaerts, as well as the rest of the film’s cast, in my supergirl Cast and character guide.
Since Krem looks nothing like his comic counterpart, some fans have already expressed their displeasure over what they consider unnecessary changes to his physical appearance. Unless there’s a narrative reason for her change in appearance, and particularly her bead-studded face, it’s a transformation that has also baffled me. If DC Studios had given us a comically accurate Krem, we’d all be a lot happier.
There will be other aspects of supergirl who will be faithful to Woman of tomorrow. Later posts on the film’s X/Twitter account indicate that we will visit familiar locations from the graphic novel, such as Coronn and Barenton. Meanwhile, other additions include Jason Momoa’s Lobo, the interstellar mercenary who was originally due to appear in Woman of tomorrow before his cameo was removed from its final edit.
With a little luck, supergirl will be as authentic as possible to its source material, and those creative deviations will complement the character-study-based story we’re all hoping it tells. I guess we’ll find out one way or another when it hits theaters later this year.
