It has been known for some time that Sonos has been working on a transmission video device that aimed to launch in 2025, with great leaks revealing what it would imply.
Now, after the previous CEO of Sonos went as a result of the horrible 2024 of the company, Sonos has a new CEO that is changing many things within the company, and according to the Verge, this has led to the cancellation of the launch of the transmission video box. The edge has shown to have very precise sound information over the years, so this is almost certain that it is correct.
Now, since I called this “condemned” box based on the details that we initially hear, specifically that it would have an advertisement -based software, but it would cost up to $ 400, I cannot say that I reacted with much surprise to see this news … but in reality, I really hope that this project is not completely dead, because half sounded incredible.
The Sonos transmission box promised to provide a completely new type of wireless experience in home cinema with Sonos speakers, acting as an HDMI switch with a 4K 120Hz step. This is a great feature alone because even in 2025, most of the best televisions will only have two HDMI 2.1 ports, and one will probably be the HDMI EARC port for its sound system.
But also, HDMI switches with automatic change between sources are really rare, so a smarter version is very desirable.
In addition, the box was configured to offer new home film configuration options with Sonos speakers. At this time, the Sonos envelope system consists of a sound bar connected to the TV, two rear speakers and an optional subwoofer, but it was said that the transmission box offered the ability to use individual speakers as individual and right front channels, with a sound bar that potentially acts as a central speaker.
Sonos fans have been crying for this for years, to provide a more ‘real’ enveloping system as an alternative to the best Dolby Atmos sound bars. It seemed finally to be on its way, and I hope this baby is not being expelled with the bathroom from the bathroom.
A simpler box, is that more competitive price?
I already wrote an essay about why this flexibility could have made the box are a great success with home cinema enthusiasts, so I will not deepen too much at this time.
But let me present what I would like to see because I think there is something that could be a great success here. What would happen if Sonos could still launch a connection box? It would simply not include the intelligent television part, which means that it needs much less powerful processing.
It would still include the HDMI step and switching functionality, and wireless connectivity to the Sonos speakers, maybe it costs about $ 200. That is not cheap, but as part of the appropriate speakers system, it could easily be worth it.
Let’s compare this with the Sony Bravia Theater Quad, which costs $ 2,500. That is a box system that includes four enveloping speakers and a wireless connector for your television. Each speaker has firing drivers forward and up.
The sounds equivalent to this would be my hypothetical wireless TV connection box, plus four were 300 sound speakers. Like Sony, this would provide enveloping conductors and suddenly, but the cost for this set would be, at the time of writing, $ 1,906. That is $ 200 for my box that I invented and $ 853 per pair of speakers of Era 300 of Sonos.
We could add a Rayo Sonos for $ 179 as a central channel (something that the Sony system lacks very unless it is connected to a Sony television), and still spending a lot that Sony’s option Cuesta: could also add a subwoofer, in that case, if you wish.
This type of speakers configuration, with genuine front speakers left and right forward, is not officially possible with a Sonos configuration at this time, a box that allows to be a great offer compared to most of the other wireless film film configurations at home, even if it seems to be expensive to buy for itself the first.
So, what I really hope is that Sonos plan to kill the side of the intelligent television software of the things that nobody really wanted, but maintains a smaller, thinner and more bad version of its TV box.
I have written before Sonos do not have any type of technology for wireless connections to the coming televisions, it will have a real long -term problem, because that will become more conventional in the coming years.
This would solve that problem and Enable the even better options for which fans have been crying: it is the type of thing that could replace Sonos in the good thanks of fans. Let’s see if it happens …
