- The AFLAC insurance giant confirms that it has been beaten with a cyber attack
- The attack seems to have been for a notorious group of scattered spiders
- The increasingly infamous group went to multiple retailers from the United Kingdom in early 2025
Afflac (American Family Life Assurance Company) has confirmed in a statement that it has suffered a cyber “incident” in which computer pirates entrusted themselves into their network.
Aflac, the largest supplier of supplementary insurance in the United States, says it could stop the intrusion “in a matter of hours” and the systems were not affected by ransomware.
While Aflac has not confirmed the source of rape or who was behind it, the rape exhibits all the signs of a scattered spider attack.
A broader campaign
The name Spatrtered Spider will sound familiar for many readers, especially since the group is supposedly behind the important and disruptive infractions of the Retaineesters of the United Kingdom Marks and Spencer and Co-Op, as well as Harrods of the luxury departments.
Google recently warned that the group pointed to US companies and urged the US insurance sector to be on social engineering alert and credential filling attacks.
Insurance companies are particularly at risk, since they have large amounts of personal data and get huge profits that can be exploited for rescue.
“This attack, like many insurance companies are experiencing, was caused by a sophisticated group of cyber crimes. This was part of a campaign of cyber crimes against the insurance industry,” said the declaration of Aflac.
“The potentially affected files contain claims information, health information, social security numbers and/or other personal information, related to customers, beneficiaries, employees, agents and other people in our United States business. We continue committed to the care and support of our clients.”
Any person who uses any service affected by this group (or affected by any data violation) must be very careful with any unexpected communication, look for social engineering attacks and must see the best identity robbery protection software to stay safe.
Aflac also offers 24 months of free credit monitoring services and identity theft protection for customers who communicate with their direct line after violation.
