- Meta CTO says Horizon Worlds will live on in VR, for now
- You won’t be able to create new worlds, but you will be able to enjoy existing games.
- He says he will remain alive in virtual reality in this way for the “foreseeable future.”
It seems that reports of horizon worlds‘ death was greatly exaggerated: Meta has announced that it will not be removing the VR version from its metaverse after all.
Earlier this week, Meta announced that it would stop supporting the VR version of horizon worlds and making it a mobile-only app, sending an email to all Quest users telling them they only had until June 15 to enjoy their favorite created worlds before they were gone forever.
Now, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth has said that they will keep the app active for VR users in a limited capacity after all. Responding to someone who said they were “heartbroken” by the closure, Bosworth said in an Instagram AMA: “I have some good news for you.”

“We have decided, in fact, today, that we will maintain horizon worlds working in virtual reality for existing games,” he revealed, although Bosworth added that the new games will not arrive in virtual reality and said that, for Meta, “most of our energy goes to mobile devices” because “that’s where most of the energy of consumers and creators was already.”
He ended the segment by explaining that this limited version of horizon worlds will be available for “the foreseeable future.”
The best of both worlds (Horizon)
For me, even as someone who never liked horizon worldsThis is the ideal scenario.
As I noted when the cancellation was announced, even if horizon worlds was never very popular, there will be plenty of people who created their perfect VR worlds or curated a list of their favorite VR games and hangouts, who were now having that taken away from them.
However, these users will continue to have access to all that content thanks to this change of direction. Meanwhile, those of us who hated having horizon worlds Shoved down our throats will not face the constant overpromotion of Meta in virtual reality.
Although I wouldn’t be surprised if horizon worlds It doesn’t survive much longer even on the mobile phone. Maybe my perception is wrong, but against gigantic titles (Roblox and fortnite) with similar custom game design elements, is there room for the Meta platform to win over a significant number of users?
I’m not convinced, just from the perspective that I never hear anyone talk about horizon worlds — this cancellation story is the one that has had the most buzz in years — meanwhile, I can’t avoid the references to Roblox either fortnite in the gaming space, and I’ve never touched Roblox; It is simply a gaming giant.
We’ll have to wait and see how horizon worlds develops, but at least for now, VR players will be able to hold on to their worlds for a little while longer.
