A copy of a first information report began to circulate on social networks in Pakistan, with statements that a 65 -year -old man from the Ahmadi community was arrested in the city of Gujranwala in Punjab for distributing Biryani in Ashura.
According to the alleged FIR, a man filed a complaint at the Satellite Town police station in Gujranwala on July 6 at 4:30 pm, saying that he saw an Ahmadí man who distributes free meals during the Islamic month of Muharram. The complaint was filed under section 298-C of the Pakistan Criminal Code (PPC).
Others on social networks questioned if the FIR was authentic and if a person can be arrested for simply distributing free food.

The FIR is in fact authentic, and the man Ahmadi has been arrested by the Punjab police, two officials confirmed.
A police officer at the Satellite City Police Station in Gujranwala, who spoke about anonymity, confirmed to Geographic data verification that the FIR that circulated online was registered in its police station. He added that the accused man had been arrested, but refused to go into details about the charges.
The case was registered under section 298-C of the Pakistan Criminal Code, which prohibits Ahmadis from calling themselves Muslims or spreading their faith. However, it is not clear how this provision applies to the act of distributing free meals.
