- All remote controls of the Google TV device will have a free TV button
- This will lead users directly to the center with 150 free channels.
- Already appeared on devices such as onn 4k pro
All new and future Google TV devices will have a Free TV button in the remote controls included, Google has confirmed.
Google TV, which appears on some of the best televisions and best transmission devices, has access to more than 150 free channels that do not require a subscription or installation of applications, a collection that Google calls Freeplay. These can be found in the ‘Live’ tab in Google TV devices.
As reported by Android Authority, Google has confirmed that in the future since April 2025, any Google TV device with a remote control will include a free TV button that will take users directly to this live tab.
This is the same as the current direct access buttons that you can find in some remote controls for some of the best transmission services such as Netflix, Disney Plus and Prime Video.
The button is already included in some Google TV devices, such as onn 4K Pro, a Walmart exclusive Google TV transmission device.
Google confirmed that the markets where Freeplay are not offered (anywhere outside the United States), this shortcut can be assigned to live TV guides equivalent.
An idea welcome, but design is important
Free TV (FAST) channels backed by advertisements have become increasingly popular in recent years, with services such as LG channels, presented on the best LG televisions that provide users accessing a wide range of free movies and programs.
By adding the Free TV button to Google TV Remote, Google is giving users an easy way to access these fast channels, which can only be good.
However, this means that televisions used by Google TV, such as Sony, Hisense (in the United States), TCL and Philips (in the United Kingdom and Europe) must include these buttons in their remote controls. Google did not confirm “size, color or placement required” to Android Authority, but it seems that the rest of the remote control can still be customized to “meet customer needs.” Fortunately, manufacturers do not have to follow the particularly prominent example of Onn 4K Pro.
Regardless of the design, this is a welcome addition to the Google TV remote control, since it will be an easy way for users to access free live channels at a time when subscription service prices continue to upload. And the best things in life are free, right?
