- Monochrome Kindles are “a little sharper,” says Amazon
- The information appears in the Kindle Color FAQ.
- You still get a high-quality experience on Colorsoft Kindles
When Amazon introduced the Kindle Colorsoft last October, we wondered what kind of compromises might come with the color screen, and Amazon has officially admitted that its black and white e-readers offer a superior reading experience.
As spotted by Good e-Reader (via Android Police), the FAQs for some color Kindles have been updated to say that the monochrome Kindle Paperwhite offers a “slightly sharper” display for your e-books.
While the text appears to have disappeared from the page of the new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft introduced last month, it can still be found listed on the Kindle Colorsoft and, indeed, on the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition.
That’s not to say there’s anything particularly wrong with the Colorsoft models, however: Amazon says these e-readers offer a “high-quality reading experience,” albeit with a different level of brightness and texture than black-and-white Kindles.

We certainly didn’t have any complaints about the screen in our Amazon Kindle Colorsoft review, calling the ereader’s screen snappy, sharp, and fantastic for content like comics. Of course, the screen is not bright or saturated like that of a phone or tablet.
The color element is added via a separate color layer: specifically, a Kaleido 3 color display from E Ink, supporting 4,096 different shades. It’s the same screen technology you’ll also find in Kobo color e-readers.
In fact, Kobo beat Amazon in the race to bring a color e-reader to the world, and it can be argued that Kobo’s models (Libra Color and Clara Color) will give you better value for money.
We haven’t had a chance to review the latest Kindle Scribe Colorsoft in full, but our first impressions are good, and of course it adds stylus support. Color e-reader screens may be a little less sharp, but it’s nothing to worry about.
