- AMD Reportedly Stopped Production of the Radeon RX 7900 GRE
- This is reflected in the rapid disappearance of the mid-range GPU from the shelves.
- AMD is likely paving the way for new RDNA 4 graphics cards
AMD is ditching the Radeon RX 7900 GRE from its current-gen GPU lineup, if the new grapevine gossip is to be believed.
According to a report by Dutch technology site Tweakers, the RX 7900 GRE is now at the end of its life and AMD is stopping production of this graphics card.
Tweakers explains that it received notice from a retailer that this was the case, and that establishment had heard from several suppliers that the 7900 GRE was indeed out of the mix.
Add a lot of salt, but if true, once existing stock runs out, it will be the end of this popular GPU. (The RX 7900 GRE is still, in fact, our top pick for the best graphics cards out there.)
The site clarifies that AMD will continue to support the card with its software (driver updates), as would clearly be expected.
Tweakers further notes that AMD did not respond to requests to confirm that the RX 7900 GRE had been discontinued, but that’s not surprising – we wouldn’t expect the Red Team to do so.
The report also notes that stocks (presumably in the Netherlands) are dwindling, and the lack of availability supports the idea that this RDNA 3 GPU, which was first introduced as an Asia-only model, before launching nationwide worldwide, is about to disappear. .
Analysis: In fact, the stock has practically disappeared
Moving on to Newegg in the US, we notice that there is only one model of the RX 7900 GRE left on sale – the Acer BiFrost spin on the AMD GPU – and all the others are now sold out. Micro Center also seems to be almost completely sold out, so this graphics card seems to be disappearing. Stocks have reportedly been declining for the past two months.
Why AMD might be keeping our favorite GPU of the moment? Well, it could have something to do with the performance of the Navi 31 chip, meaning that silicon not suitable for the high-end RX 7900 models, which would be reused for the GRE, has simply run out.
Of course, Navi 31 production will likely be reduced anyway, as new RDNA 4 graphics cards are rumored to be released in the first quarter of 2025. They’ll supposedly include the RX 8800 XT (and more), and that GPU The RX 7900 GRE is possibly redundant in terms of its value proposition.
In short, this is another sign that a powerful midrange offering is imminent: AMD will supposedly reveal its new RDNA 4 GPUs at CES 2025, with the boards launching shortly after, and we can’t wait to see how those RX 8000s perform. models take shape.
