- AMD has confirmed that the RX 9070 models will be available in March 2025
- This goes against rumors that suggested a late January release.
- PC gamers are not happy, especially since stocks of RDNA 4 graphics cards are rumored to have already shipped to retailers.
AMD has confirmed that its RX 9070 graphics cards, the first initial models in the RDNA 4 family, will not be available until March.
David McAfee, vice president and general manager of Ryzen CPUs and Radeon graphics at AMD, posted on X to share the news.
The Radeon 9000 series hardware and software look great and we plan to have a wide variety of cards available globally. I can’t wait for players to get their hands on the cards when they go on sale in March!January 20, 2025
So the on-sale date for the initial RX 9070 Reddit).
What has people upset? Well, first of all, this is disappointing news based on rumors that AMD was set to launch these RX 9070 GPUs in late January to take the mid-range fight to Nvidia, ahead of the launch of the RTX 5070 variants in February .
Or at least that AMD was going to have a big reveal of the RX 9070 graphics cards, possibly later this week, which surely won’t happen now. There’s no point in having a big announcement at the end of January if these next-gen GPUs don’t appear for what could be the better part of two months from now.
Part of the problem is that a couple of AMD executives have been dropping hints that the RX 9070 announcement “won’t be long” and will be in the “near future,” which to me, and clearly others, suggested it’s pretty imminent. .
Of course, all AMD has officially said is that RDNA 4 graphics cards will launch in the first quarter of 2025, and of course March still fits with that. But based on that time period, nothing about March jibes with any indication that full revelation is “near”; in fact, it couldn’t be further away in this initial quarter of 2025.
Analysis: An unfortunate sense of confusion and chaos
While AMD hasn’t broken any of its promises, some PC gamers feel that way. Never mind the theoretically delayed release date or full reveal, beyond this, why mention GPUs at CES 2025? Or at least AMD could have made it clear with that teaser that these cards were not imminent, which was largely the expectation. (Actually, most people expected, not without reason, all the details and the presentation at CES, not a brief glimpse.)
Whatever the case, the underlying problem here is that AMD seems to be going around in circles on its RDNA 4 plans, changing direction and generally causing confusion among potential buyers of the best GPUs as 2025 begins. Regardless of which Whether it’s the real truth about what could be happening behind closed doors on the Red Team, based on what we can see and the rumors that are circulating, it all seems very chaotic.
We must remember that these are just rumors, but there have been many sightings of RX 9070 models in boxes, ready to go on sale at retailers. VideoCardz, which spotted AMD’s post on
If there really is stock now, as it seems, with a handful of salt ready, why wait? This is where other behind-the-scenes talk comes into play about AMD having unfortunate issues with adjusting launch prices, after being surprised by where Nvidia launched its RTX 5070 models (which surprised us all, let’s be honest). And there are issues with trying to adjust MSRPs and compensate retailers, although that’s all very much in rumor territory.
The problem is, there’s not much else except this scenario that makes a lot of sense, and the pieces of the puzzle (restricted release, then mostly radio silence after that, save for the aforementioned vague hints of a full reveal “soon”) seem to fit together. good. enough.
This also leaves AMD in a very strange position. Instead of being able to get in, ahead of the RTX 5070 coming out in February, the Red Team will wait until those rival mid-range graphics cards have come out, perhaps for a month, so there could be a lot of dropouts. turning to the Green Team. Well, assuming the RTX 5070 stock isn’t some kind of flop – and that seems to be the main threat to putting out Nvidia’s next-gen GPU fire – that there will only be a relative shortage of Blackwell graphics cards in early 2025 .
I didn’t see the next-gen GPU wars developing like this, that’s for sure, and maybe AMD really needs to put out a full specs reveal and pricing announcement sooner rather than later, even if RDNA 4 is on sale . The date is March and this leaves a big void. Assuming those MSRPs have already been decided, this would at least let gamers know what to expect, perhaps persuading them not to give up and just go for the RTX 5070 in February, rather than waiting for the RX 9070 GPUs.
However, there are already gamers saying this is forcing them to abandon a planned next-gen Radeon purchase for Nvidia Blackwell, although we’ll have to see to what extent this is an initial angry reaction.
