- Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9995WX now for sale with Zen 5, 96 cores, 192 threads
- Most powerful AMD work station CPU available for the main retailers for $ 11,699
- Most professionals will not need 9995WX despite the impressive specifications
The AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9995WX is now available to buy in the main retailers, including Amazon and Newgg, with an initial price of $ 11,699, much cheaper than the initial predictions.
It is the upper chip in the new WXRIPE Pro 9000 WX of AMD and is based on the latest Zen 5 architecture, with 96 cores, 192 threads and offers a clock up to 5.4GHz.
The 9995WX uses the 4NM process of TSMC and adapts to the STR5 plug. The CPU admits 8-channel DDR5-6400 memory, offers up to 148 PCIe lanes and carries a 350W TDP.
For professional workloads
This processor is aimed at professional workloads that can climb in dozens of threads.
AMD lists chips compatibility such as Pro 695, TRX50 and WRX90.
The chip is also compatible with ECC memory and includes features such as AMD Pro Technologies and Expo for memory adjustment.
For those who execute highly parallel tasks such as the representation of visual effects or scientific modeling, this processor can offer impressive performance, but at this price, it is difficult to recommend unless the application is really exceeding the limits of the nucleus count.
Although AMD’s new CPU can offer unique multiple performance in the right environment, most professionals will probably find a better value in the lower level options of AMD (EPYC 9655 coincides with Threadripper Pro 9995Wx Core counts for less than half of the price) or on the CPU of the Intel workstation, depending on its specific use case.
Without integrated graphics, a discreet GPU is required. The cooling is also left to the buyer, since no refrigerator is grouped.
Unless it is operating in a niche that really benefits 96 cores, it is unlikely that it is the best option or offers the best value for most users.
Buyers in the United Kingdom can, as always, expect to pay a little more than their American counterparts. Novatech is selling the new chip for £ 10,510, or around $ 14,205.
