- A new design for the pixel lock screen has been seen
- Parts of the Widget at-A-Glance could be repositioned
- Android 16’s complete update is expected to land during June
With Android 16 now reaching the horizon quickly and directly for our phones, we are learning more and more about the characteristics that it will bring, including, potentially, a renewed design for the blocking screen on pixel devices.
This comes from an excavation that Android Authority has made in the latest beta version for Android 16. These changes are not yet live, but are hidden in the code, and the Android Authority team has managed to work.
In general, it is a cleaner and minimalist aspect for the lock screen: the small and practical Widget of Atlismo that Google puts on its Pixel phones, which shows information such as the upcoming calendar appointments and the current date, is reorganized.
This widget can really be useful to show relevant information without the blocking screen being necessary to unlock, so it is important that it is easily readable and accessible. It is not yet clear if this new design will be configurable in some way.
Design changes
How the new lock screen is seen will depend on what is shown. If there are no notifications or fragments of Widgets information (as an upcoming calendar event), the date and time of the widget move under the clock, from their current upper left corner position.
If there are information fragments in the Widget about events, timers or anything else, they remain in the upper left corner, where they are currently. It makes sense that these details may need a little more prominence in general design.
If there are notifications of applications on the screen, the clock changes to the upper part and the information fragments are underneath, which is what happens now. However, the date and weather move to the right of the clock, instead from under it.
That gives you more space under the clock for incoming notifications, which is useful, especially if you are receiving many of them. Android 16 is expected to be the time of June, and we should hear more about it on Google I/or 2025 next month.
