Google News continues to arrive: as we enter the second day of Google I/O 2025, Google has marked “new applications of applications in the car” for Android Auto, which will include video players and browser applications for the first time.
According to the official blog publication, the support for the video and the browsers “will arrive soon” to Android Auto. However, like Android Auto games, these applications will only work when your vehicle is parked to prevent them from distracting it on the road.
For video players, the deployment initially will be for Android 16 and “select compatible cars”, so it seems that this could depend a little on the hardware you are using and the board you are connecting.
Google mentions being able to listen to the audio of the videos while driving, but this is still in the “early access” stage for now, and there is more work to do here for Google, car manufacturers and application developers.
Take the weather with you
In the same blog post, Google says that the category of weather applications has graduated from beta, which means that they do not need a specific approval to run on Android Auto; Look for more weather applications that appear soon.
For cars with the already integrated Google panels (which are not many, at this time), the development is even later: the category of video applications is now open for shipments, while the browser category is currently in beta.
The blog post also mentions that the Gemini Assistant will come to Android Auto in the “next months”, which is something we had already seen signs. Eventually, all voice control tasks on the board will be taken care of.
Being able to sit down and watch a video with passengers on Android Auto would be a very welcome update. For me, web navigation on the board of a car is less attractive, but it is good to see that the platform is updated and expands over time.
