- A new Bloomberg report says that Apple will change the way it has its operating systems
- The change will be to match the year, so not iOS 19 but iOS 26
- It is said that the change will be for ipados, macOS, watchos, tvos and visionos too
With only 12 days until Apple’s WWDC 2025 begins on June 9, 2025, with a main opening, rumors and reports are reaching what the technological giant could announce. Since it is the World Developer Conference, we hope that the CEO Tim Cook and a large number of executives will guide us through the next generation of platforms.
Until a new report, we were totally expected iOS 19 and Ipados 19, the next generation of macOS with a unique place in California, giving it a name and new versions of watchos, tvos and visions, all uploading by a number.
According to Mark Gurman from BloombergHowever, Apple could be throwing a curved ball and abandoning the concept of naming software in the next generational issue. The report establishes that, instead of presenting iOS 19, the successor of iOS 18, Apple will present iOS 26.
“Apple’s next operating systems will be identified per year, instead of a version number,” says the report. Together with iOS jumping at 26, it seems that Apple could deploy ipados 26, macos 26, watchos 26, tvos 26, and perhaps more surprisingly, visionos 26. The latter would be the most significant jump, since we currently only have visiones 2, and the vision pro as a whole is not a aging device.
It seems that Apple’s change, at least as described in this report, aims to clarify some confusion and establish uniformity in its brand. It is rumored that the new name convention arrives along with a long -range design update called “Solarium” that is expected to affect each of Apple’s platforms: iOS, iPados, macos, watchos, visions and tvos included.
I am personally excited about the most transparent design update for the iPhone software and the rest of the platforms; It will revitalize and make all the experience feel a little cleaner, at least I think so. However, this new name convention is a bit more confusing to me: Apple seems to be adopting a similar approach to car manufacturers, naming its software for the following year.
That feels a bit confusing in paper, but I am curious to see how Apple explains this on stage. It could also indicate that Siri now delayed with AI, the historical characteristic of Apple’s intelligence, may not land until 2026, although that is really an assumption for an arrival.
Apple would not be the first company to take a jump of faith with its name conventions. Samsung jumped from the Galaxy S10 family to the Galaxy S20And Microsoft has tried this for a few years, then returned to generational numbers.
However, the new nomenclature strategy for iOS, ipados, macOS, tvos, watchos and visos will not be the only news or changes. We hope you will redesign through the platforms, in addition to the potential for a dedicated game application for iPhone, iPad and Mac, a redesigned translation application and some improvements for the set of Apple intelligence characteristics.
Of course, all this should be taken with a grain of salt for now, but we will report live from Cupertino on June 9, 2025, to break everything Apple announces on WWDC 2025, so be staying with Techradar.
