- Code in Macos Tahoe suggests that a 5G Macbook could be on their way
- Apparently, Apple is testing it in a MacBook with M5 Pro chip
- However, there is no guarantee that a 5G Macbook will be launched
Apple’s best iPhones and iPads have been imbued with 5G goodness, but MacBooks remain excluded in the cold. However, there are clues now that that could change soon, and I think this could bring some serious benefits.
The idea of a 5G Macbook has not been presented by a doubtful leak or an industry analyst, no, it comes from Apple. According to MacWorld, Apple’s Macos Tahoe code contains references to a MAC with an unpublished code “T6050” that will have a M5 Pro chip, indicating that it will be part of the next generation of MacBook Pro laptops.
Crucially, the code suggests that this MacBook will come with a “Centauri” chip, says Macworld. Centauri is the code name of Apple’s 5g modem, which made its way to the 16E iPhone under the name C1. If the MacWorld report is necessary, that would make Macbook Pro with M5 Pro Chip the first APPLE laptop in presenting 5G connectivity.
The moment makes sense, since Apple equipped its 16E iPhone with its first internal 5G modem last year. With more control over the characteristics and chip manufacturing process, Apple could feel that it is the right time to bring 5G capabilities to its laptop range.
And with the efficiency of Apple Silicon added to the mixture, there would be less concern for the chip that improperly drains the battery of his laptop.
Connectivity outside the grid
At first glance, add 5G to a MacBook may seem like a strange idea. After all, no one is about to hold a clumsy portable computer to your ear to make a phone call. And when I heard this rumor for the first time, I was quite unconvinced.
But the idea has been growing in me in recent months. Far from being an anachronism, 5G could actually bring some beautiful advantages to its Apple laptop, both in terms of connectivity and safety.
For example, it could help you stay connected to the Internet in places where Wi-Fi is not available, such as when you travel or leave the network. In addition to that, it would mean that you would not need to connect to free Wi-Fi in bars and restaurants, avoiding what can be a serious safety risk for your laptop.
Even so, there is no guarantee that Apple has launched a 5G MacBook. Although it has been rumored for many months, the company could simply be testing the device and, ultimately, decide not to launch it.
But with the M5 series macbooks they are expected to arrive at the end of 2025 or early 2026, we could discover it relatively soon.
