- Apple has officially discontinued the Mac Pro
- The company supposedly has no plans for a new version in the future.
- TechRadar Readers Say Their $700 Wheels Are the Worst Apple Product Ever Made
It’s official: Apple has killed the Mac Pro. The company’s flagship desktop Mac, whose maxed out model could cost more than $50,000, is no longer available for sale on Apple’s website, and the Mac Pro page redirects to the general Mac home page.
And according to 9to5Mac, this isn’t just an error on the website: the outlet claimed that Apple confirmed to it that the Mac Pro has been permanently discontinued. We say “permanently” because 9to5Mac also alleged that Apple said it has no more plans for future Mac Pro hardware. That’s about as definitive as it gets.
The last update to the Mac Pro came in 2023, and with just three revisions in the last 14 years, it’s been clear for some time that the Mac Pro was low on Apple’s priority list. And although a new M4 Ultra model was rumored in 2025, it never came true. The lack of updates suggested that sales figures were poor, and Apple evidently felt it wasn’t worth developing further with new chips and features given minimal public interest.

Even before its cancellation, the Mac Pro was in an awkward situation. Despite starting at $6,999 / £7,199 (around AU$10,160), it was beaten by the Mac Studio which, at $1,999 / £2,099 / AU$3,499, was less than a third the price of the Mac Pro. But with an outdated M2 Ultra compared to the Mac Studio’s M3 Ultra, the Mac Pro’s appeal was largely limited to its superior expansion options, but that alone didn’t justify the price difference.
The curse of the $700 wheels
Despite its high-end features and eye-popping price, the Mac Pro was sometimes overshadowed by its own accessories. Specifically, the base model came with a set of four static legs, but these could be supplemented with a pack of four wheels that would allow it to be moved. The problem? Those four wheels were priced at an outrageous $699 / £699 / AU$1,049.
That quickly set social media alight, with the idea that it was emblematic of Apple’s price-gouging trends that were quickly gaining traction. It was an idea that Apple had a hard time shaking off – even as the company launched value-for-money offerings like the Mac mini and MacBook Neo in later years – and it came to tarnish the Mac Pro in the public’s eyes.
In fact, we conducted a survey on the official TechRadar WhatsApp channel asking users to name the worst Apple product. The winner (if you can call it that) was none other than the $699 Mac Pro wheelset, which garnered a whopping 56% of the votes (we’ll reveal the full results this weekend).
Our readers are not alone. On Reddit, users sarcastically lamented the disappearance of the expensive set of wheels. “End of an era,” said one commenter, while another humorously stated, “I picked some up yesterday and was willing to sell them for $2,500 a wheel. Please text me if you’re interested.”
Clearly, Apple considered the wheels a big misstep. And now that the Mac Pro reaches the end of its lifespan, perhaps the almighty computer will be judged the same way. Although he had a dedicated audience, he always struggled to justify his own existence. It has now been relegated to history, seemingly forever.
