- An iPhone Flip is rumored to be in testing at Apple
- It joins the iPhone Fold, which is expected to launch later in 2026.
- Apple apparently has yet to decide on mass production
There’s another twist in the foldable iPhone story, as Apple is now rumored to be testing the idea of a book-style foldable phone, as well as the book-style foldable that’s expected to launch later this year, and that may have a serious impact on our list of the best foldable phones.
This comes from well-known tipster Fixed Focus Digital (via 9to5Mac), who says that Apple engineers have definitely looked at a foldable foldable. However, according to the leaker, it remains to be seen whether it will actually reach mass production.
It would certainly make sense for Apple to at least weigh the idea of releasing an iPhone that folds from top to bottom and side to side. Devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 have shown how compact and foldable these foldable devices can be when closed.
And it’s not the first time an iPhone Flip has been rumored: Hints about such a phone date back to at least 2021, although with the iPhone Fold almost certain to launch sometime in 2026, it appears Apple is taking these form factors more seriously than ever.
Flip vs fold
Both book-style flips and flips start out as a roughly normal-sized phone, although with the flip approach you then fold the screen down and with the flip approach you open the screen.
Which one is better really depends on personal preference and how you use your phone. Something like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 gives you a larger screen if you need it, while foldable phones, like the Motorola Razr Ultra 2025, can still be useful for taking photos and checking information while closed.
Of course, now we also have triple phones, from Huawei and Samsung, which give you access to an even bigger screen. For its first foldable device, however, it looks like Apple will stick to the classic single-hinge approach.
Earlier this month, the iPhone Fold’s specs and design were posted online, and according to those in the know, it’s likely to appear in September with the iPhone 18 Pro, and an iPhone Flip may not be far behind.
