All signs point to the first foldable iPhone appearing sometime next year, but a new rumor suggests that Apple still has some technical difficulties to overcome in its efforts to make the device’s folds completely wrinkle-free.
This comes from well-known tipster Digital Chat Station (via Wccftech), who says, via Google Translate, that “technical challenges” remain in Apple’s path as it attempts to develop a foldable display that appears completely flat when opened.
Current foldables, including the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, still have slight creases on their screens, where the hinge mechanisms are located. This is not a big problem, but it does spoil the aesthetics a bit.
Many of the leaks we’ve previously heard about the foldable iPhone have suggested that Apple engineers are determined to make this device wrinkle-free, and based on this new information, it seems like they haven’t achieved that yet.

The same tipster adds additional information here, saying that Apple is experimenting with different types of ultra-thin flexible glass (UFG) and that the foldable iPhone will debut sometime in September.
Next year could end up being a busy one for Apple, with a significant shake-up expected in its iPhone launch schedule. The iPhone 18 Pro may launch in September as usual, with the iPhone 18 delayed until March 2027.
Add a foldable iPhone to the mix and it really is new territory for Apple and its smartphones. We’re also hearing that the foldable iPhone could come with an under-display camera, so there won’t be any notches or cutouts on the screen.
