- Apple Music could soon offer sharing lyrics directly to your WhatsApp status
- This would coincide with a Spotify feature released earlier this year.
- The new feature could be released with iOS 26.2
Apple is reportedly working on a new feature for Apple Music that would allow users to share songs and lyrics on their WhatsApp status, coinciding with a Spotify feature launched earlier this year.
This new integration would allow users to directly share songs or a few lines of lyrics from Apple Music to WhatsApp directly, using personalized cards and links to Apple Music.
Currently, users can share Apple Music links with their WhatsApp status, but there is no option to share lyrics and customization options are scarce. This update aims to remedy this while providing parity with Spotify.
For reference, WhatsApp Status is an Instagram Stories-style social media content carousel, sitting alongside the text thread that long-time users may be familiar with.
The new feature is currently available through Apple’s developer beta and, depending on the company’s update schedule, could launch with iOS 26.2. After all, Apple Music was the target of new features in the recent iOS 26.1 update.
And as 9to5Mac reports, there’s still at least one issue left to fix. The share icon may simply refuse to appear when trying to share a song, instead of its lyrics, but this will likely be fixed with the release.
All that said, this is another step in WhatsApp’s journey from messaging app to social platform, but more importantly, it’s a sign that Apple is still enthusiastically following Spotify’s lead as we approach the all-important Spotify Wrapped season.
Spotify is miles ahead of Apple Music when it comes to the size of its user base, with 713 million users compared to Apple’s 95 million.
Apple Music has made several solid plays to get ahead of its Swedish rival, such as offering spatial and lossless audio since 2021 (Spotify gained lossless fidelity this year and still lacks spatial audio), but it has struggled to match Spotify’s cultural cache, especially when it comes to that key ‘OK, now share it!’ Social aspect of music.
In fact, even though Apple Music Replay appeared on Spotify Wrapped last year, music fans and online commentators alike are still eagerly awaiting Spotify’s data-driven listening summary as the year comes to a close. By the way, Spotify just launched daily recaps and a weekly Wrapped deal, so it’ll be interesting to see who wins that battle this year.
While adding direct sharing to WhatsApp statuses may seem like a small improvement to some, feature parity puts Apple Music in a better position as attention turns to Spotify’s year-end antics.
