One of the things that I really hate music transmission is the algorithm, which tends to reproduce things that sound very like the things I have played. That is fine for background music, but it’s not great to find new artists and their really surprising albums. So I am really intrigued by the new characteristics of Qobuz, which focus on specific record stamps and winners.
Some labels are legendary: think of Stax or Blue Note, Motown or Deutsche Grammophon, Def Jam or Warp. And now Qobuz allows him to find more music from the artist’s seal he is currently listening, as well as the labels of his favorites.
The results will depend a lot on the label, of course. But there are real gems in those catalogs.
Let’s say he is listening to Aphex Twin (good choice, by the way). Qobuz now facilitates the search for more Warp Records artists: Squarepusher and Broadcast, Thom Yorke with Mark Pritchard, Canada boards and 48 more pages of electronic genius.
Do you prefer something a little more moving? Stax has Melissa Etheridge, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, Albert King … The idea is understood.
Musical discovery awarded
The second new feature, awards pages, is also really interesting. Qobuz has gathered a list of several awards and their winners, and the awards presented include some very prestigious, as well as the favorites of Qobuz.
For example, you can navigate the Gramophone Award Winners to discover some truly exceptional classic recordings, or you can focus on the winners of the best new Pitchfork music awards: BeyoncĂ©, Kendrick, Charli XCX, FKA Twigs, Bad Bunny, Vampire Weekend, Father John Misty …. There are 22 pages only for this award.
I love this: it is a large group of musical holes of rabbits to get lost, and I think it is very good for the target audience of Qobuz. For a long time it was marked as the transmission service for serious music and audiphile music, and navigating these collections is almost as fun as going to the treatment for new LP, Oh, and while I am in this, do not forget that the day of the record store comes, on April 12.
