- Apple will soon end the support for its old homekit architecture
- A note on the change in the Beta iOS source code was detected 18.4
- After updating, you can no longer use an iPad as a start center
It seems that Apple will soon require that all users update to Homekit’s last architecture, which is bad news if you are currently using an iPad as a starting center.
The source code for the third beta version of iOS 18.4, which was launched to developers earlier this week and seen by 9to5google, contains a warning chain to users who admit the previous version of Apple Home will end soon and that should be updated to the new architecture now “to avoid interruptions” to their Smart Home devices.
The new homekit architecture is intended to be faster, more efficient and more reliable, but so far, it has been voluntary. In fact, some users have deliberately delayed as long as possible because after the update, they will no longer be able to use an iPad as a starting center to control their intelligent domestic devices.
House is where the center is
The news reactions have been mixed, with some users in the Homekit Subnet expressing their shock that anyone would have maintained the update of so long, while others are frustrated before the perspective of having to change their hardware.
R/Homekit comment
If you currently use an iPad like your homekit hub, do not scare, you may already have another device you can use. Apple Homepod speakers will work as centers for their intelligent domestic system, as are an Apple TV. You can see the Apple guide to configure a start center here for more details.
You will probably also have some time to plan your next movement. IOS 18.4 is currently in Beta and is expected to display next month.
Even so, the Homekit update seems likely to be mandatory until the launch of iOS 19, which is expected to arrive in November, along with Apple’s Rumored Horn Hub, which could be an ideal alternative for iPad for use at home.
