Ubisoft has revealed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows It will have more than 700 cinematics, but he has emphasized that it will not be “all talk.”
Speaking with TechRadar Gaming during a recent Assassin’s Creed Shadows At the preview event, director of filmmaking David Nibbelin said that the development team focused heavily on these cinematics and that he felt it was important for players to connect with the game’s protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, between combat and open world exploration.
“We needed to find a way to make sure the cutscenes were engaging content that the player would actually want to put down control and enjoy,” Nibellin said. “So for us, when we look at cinematics, we can’t think of them as just telling a story. It seems a little silly, but what we want you to do is feel these scenes.
“We want you to think of them not simply as what happens next, but as a moment, to recognize the consequences, to reflect on the decisions you made as a player through the game or through selections, to really get an emotional reward, to that you can connect with the player the characters you are playing with.
Nibellin went on to say that these cinematics will allow players to “connect with the characters on a deeper level” and that the team addressed this idea by showing “two perspectives of Japan through the eyes of our protagonists.”
“When you think about Naoe and Yasuke, you think we have two very different views of this world,” he said. “Yasuke, who arrives seeing the crème de la crème, the top of the elite level. He meets Oda Nobunaga, and then Naoe, the daughter of a farmer in the Iga Hills, sees it from a very different side. .
“It is easy to see great armies and great figures and think [of] the most generic historical context, but how was the arrival of these two experiences into this world? So when you connect through the story, you have to connect through them.”
The developer also teased that players will be able to experience Naoe and Yasuke’s personal stories, their family dynamics, and how they both deal with loss and romance, while at the same time being firmly rooted in Japanese lore.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows It was delayed earlier this month and will now release on March 20 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC.
