- Shahrez arrested on August 21 in the case of May 9.
- His lawyer argues that accusations could not be tested.
- The public prosecutor opposes Shahrez’s bail statement.
An anti -terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Wednesday granted a bond after arrest to Shahrez Khan, nephew of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in a case related to his alleged participation in May 9, 2023, disturbances.
Early in the day, the ATC reserved its verdict in the bail request presented by Shahrez, son of the sister of PTI, Aleema Khan, in the case of attack of the Jinnah house. He was arrested on August 21.
May 9 riots burst throughout the country after the arrest of PTI’s founder in a corruption case in 2023. Violence included attacks against military and state facilities, with the incident of the Jinnah house becoming one of the most high profile cases.
At the beginning of today’s audience, Shahrez’s lawyer argued that accusations of inciting PTI workers had been level against their client, but the Prosecutor’s Office did not produce any evidence to support claims.
Given this, the prosecutor, while opposing the bail statement, told the court that the sworn statement of the suspect had not been verified.
The court reserved its verdict after listening to arguments from both parties and announced it later at night.
Earlier on August 30, Lahore Police presented Aleema’s son before the judge of the Atc Court, Manzer Ali Gill, at the end of his physical prison.
During the hearing, the Prosecutor’s Office sought an extension in physical preventive detention for a greater investigation of the accused. Judge Gill, rejecting the police application, sent it to judicial request.
It is pertinent to mention here that Khan’s second nephew, Shershah, is also in police custody in the case of May 9 disturbances. He was also arrested on August 22.
After the expiration of his five -day physical prison, the ATC on August 29 sent Shershah to a 14 -day judicial prison in the case of violence.
The sources had told PakGazette News that both suspects were mainly arrested for their alleged participation in the Jinnah House attack.
“Shershah was present with Hassan Niazi at the time of the attack of the Jinnah house and had previously been reserved in relation to the case. He faced accusations of fire, vandalism and torch a police truck, as well as” administer an anti-state digital campaign for months. “
He allegedly hid after violence and then fled to London, where he remained for almost two years, the sources added.
