- Aura Ink has a 13.3-inch natural six-color display
- Unlike digital photo frames, it does not require continuous power.
- It costs $499 (UK and Australian prices to be confirmed)
Aura has just moved from making the best digital photo frames, like its Walden, to a completely new, energy-efficient type of color e-paper: Aura Ink.
Announced and available from today for $499 at Aura Frames (pricing TBC in the UK and Australia), Aura Ink can run for three months on a single charge, meaning you can ditch unsightly cables and get a clean display on your wall or sideboard.
The six-color E Ink Spectraâ„¢ 6 display can reproduce millions of shades for realistic color photographs, with what Aura says is the “warmth and subtlety of a printed photograph.”
For the first time in Aura, the Ink e-paper frame has a 13.3-inch display that is just 0.6 inches thick and is surrounded by a generous and attractive mount and bezel.
Ink is compatible with Aura’s excellent subscription-free app for remote image uploading. Having tried many digital photo frames, I can say that Aura’s is one of the easiest apps to use.
The future of digital photo frames?
Aura says it has advanced e-paper technology in Ink with richer colors and smarter lighting, which overcome the drawbacks of e-paper displays, namely images that would otherwise appear dim.
Aura’s diffused approach expands the six-color system to a host of shades, which are further enhanced in contrast with a subtle built-in front light.
The result is a natural, bright paper-like display that gives off the feel of a printed image, without the dazzling glare of a standard digital photo frame.
And unlike digital photo frames, the Aura Ink is extremely energy efficient – it will run for up to three months on a full charge, so it can be attached without unsightly cables.
I already have the Aura Ink in my hands; It is certainly a high-end frame. Check back soon for my full review of a fancy frame that looks like it’s about to cause trouble in our guide to the best digital photo frames.
