Bad governance blamed for flood losses

LAHORE:

The Pakistan Human Rights Commission (HRCP) has said that recent floods throughout the country are not simply “natural disasters”, but a direct consequence of human negligence and poor governance.

The Commission indicated the reports of South Punjab, parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, highlighting an extensive loss of lives and properties, which linked to invasions without control, deforestation, corruption and environmental contempt.

While the aid operations are underway, the HRCP warned that the assistance scale is far from adequate. He requested the immediate deployment of more aid equipment, the establishment of additional camps and equitable access to food, shelter, clean water and medical care.

The statement emphasized that vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities, must be prioritized.

The commission described those displaced by floods as “climatic refugees” who deserve long -term rehabilitation.

He urged the Government to provide sustainable homes and opportunities for livelihoods, warning that the inability to do so would boost poverty and social disturbances.

According to the HRCP, the secondary consequences of the disaster will soon be developed in the form of an increase in food prices, large -scale migration to cities and the collapse of the already overloaded urban infrastructure.

With vast extensions of submerged and cultivated culture lands, food supply chains are expected to face serious interruptions, creating an economic and humanitarian crisis.

The commission emphasized that the fragmentary measures or short term would not be enough. Instead, he urged the establishment of empowered and ingenious local governments to guarantee the quick preparation and response at the community level.

He also requested the revitalization of civil defense institutions, the modernization of early alert systems and the prioritization of climate resistant infrastructure.
