- Sony has announced that it has suspended production of CFexpress and SD memory cards.
- This is a temporary measure, but it will be this way for the “foreseeable future”, we are told.
- There will still be stock of these memory cards in circulation for some time as existing inventory is running low.
The latest blow dealt by the memory crisis is that Sony is no longer shipping SD and CFexpress memory cards to its partners, nor is it supplying cards directly to consumers.
PetaPixel spotted the official announcement (via The Verge) in which Sony Japan said: “Due to the global shortage of semiconductors (memory) and other factors, it is anticipated that supply will not be able to meet demand for CFexpress memory cards and SD memory cards in the foreseeable future.
“Therefore, we have decided to temporarily suspend the acceptance of orders from our authorized dealers and customers in the Sony Store from March 27, 2026 onwards.”

We don’t know how long this will last, Sony says it intends to monitor supply levels and when things improve it will announce the resumption of production.
As PetaPixel makes clear, this affects all but a few models of these memory cards. Sony’s 960GB CFexpress Type B card is still in production (it’ll cost you a lot, in case you don’t know, since they’re aimed at professionals), and so are the lower-end SF-UZ series SD cards (which are largely discontinued in the US anyway, it should be noted).
Analysis: is it time to panic?
Does this mean that photographers will no longer be able to purchase a Sony memory card? No, this represents the closure of production (for now). There is still stock shipping from Sony and in the supply chain, in transit or in warehouses, as well as products currently on shelves.
As always, when this type of movement occurs, it will take some time before all of this inventory is gone. But when it runs out, you won’t be able to buy these SD or CFexpress cards.
And with that knowledge now public, there may be more urgency for some people to buy (especially with more popular products), even though prices have already skyrocketed considerably. We’ve witnessed high-end SD cards skyrocket in price or go out of stock, and sadly, it looks like the road will only get tougher from here.
