LAHORE:
Participants in a convention rejected the 26th Constitutional Amendment, considering it a blow to the supremacy of the Constitution and the independence of the judiciary.
The All Pakistan Bar Convention held at the Lahore Bar High Court on Friday passed a unanimous resolution stating that the 26th amendment destroys the constitutional regime and judicial freedom.
The resolution stated that the legal community will continue its fight until the amendment is completely repealed. He declared that the lawyers would not accept any judicial verdict rendered in favor of the amendment and promised that their movement would persist “until the Constitution is fully restored in Pakistan.”
A large number of senior lawyers and representatives of bar associations from across the country attended the convention, reaffirming their unity and commitment to uphold the rule of law, judicial independence and constitutional supremacy.
A Supreme Court OC will resume hearing petitions filed against the 26th Constitutional Amendment which, passed by parliament in October last year, brought sweeping changes in the judiciary, including the formation of OCs.
