Jarred Shaw, a 34 -year -old basketball player in the Indonesian basketball league, was arrested after allegedly trying to smile illegal drugs in the country, police said Thursday.
Strict drug laws in Indonesia have potentially face a life imprisonment and even the death penalty if it is convicted. The condemned smuggers have been executed by a shots squad in the past.
Ronald Sipayung, Chief of Police of the Soekarno-Hatta airport, said the authorities raided Shaw’s apartment on the outskirts of the country’s capital, Yakarta, where 132 pieces of cannabis sweets confiscated.

Shaw told the police that he wanted to share the sweets with his teammates, Sipayung said.

“We are still executing the investigation to discover the international drug network behind this case and stop its distribution,” Sipayung added.
Shaw was present during a press conference on Wednesday on the matter with an orange shirt and a mask with his hands tied.
He has played for several teams in the Indonesian Basketball League, including the Tangerang Hawks, the team with which he signed a contract last year. Shaw has been playing in the league since 2022.

However, the Hawks manager, Tikky Suwantikno, told journalists on Thursday that Shaw was immediately fired due to breach of the contract. The League has also forbidden to play.
“We do not tolerate the players, administrators or anyone in the field involved in drugs,” said the president of the Indonesian Basketball League, Djiwandono Budisatrio. “There is no space for drug users in the world of basketball.”
There are about 530 people in the death corridor in Indonesia, and most of them are in prison for crimes related to drugs, according to data from the Ministry of Imigration and Corrections. Of that total, 96 were foreigners.
The last time executions were carried out was July 2016, when an Indonesian and three foreigners were executed.

Shaw, a native of Dallas, played university basketball for the state of Oklahoma and the state of Utah. The 10 -inch striker saw more game time with Utah State, averaging 28.3 minutes per game in 58 competitions.
During his time with the Aggies, Shaw averaged 14.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks.
