- AMD FSR 4 yield is a bit weaker than FSR 3, based on the new demonstration test of Fidelityfx SDK 2.0
- The performance difference is only 5%, which is not significant, but it can be at much lower table or weaker
- FSR 4 may still be the best option for RDNA 4 GPU users
AMD FSR extension technology has traveled a long way to offer excellent performance and visual quality, with the FSR 3 to FSR 4 jump that serves as proof of that, especially in one of the best GPU in the market, but there is a trap.
The new Fidelityfx SDK 2.0 tests of the Osvaldo Pinali (Opinali On X) technology enthusiast show the FSR 4 tax on the performance in the games compared to FSR 3. using the RADEON RX 9070 XT in a FSR demonstration, FSR 3.1.5 provides 290 fps, while FSR 4.0.2 ACHIES 276 FPS.
The new SDK (software development kit) expands FSR 4 support with a higher developer access for games integration, which also briefly saw FSR 4 GOs Complete open form before AMD retired from Github, which points to the efforts of Team Red of Portar FSR 4 back to older GPUs.
Without diverting the point, Pinali essentially discovered that FSR 4 has a 37% higher GPU use, probably due to its functionality based on automatic learning (ML). However, the table difference between FSR 3 and FSR 4 in the Fidelityfx SDK 2.0 test is only 5%, which is simply not significant enough to hinder performance in games.
The visual quality improvements of FSR 4 on FSR 3 are possibly at night and day; It is not as good as the Nvidia DLSS 4 offer, but it is a great alternative, and has already overcome DLSS 3 in terms of its super resolution.
Where the 5% difference can have a slightly higher impact is with the weakest RDNA 4 GPUs, or in games that require executing, which have much lower average box speeds.
In the sample I can choose the FSR version. With FG OFF, VSYNC OFF: 9070 XT, FSR 3.1.5: 290FPS9070 XT, FSR 4.0.2: 276FPSRTX 5080, FSR 3.1.5: 356FPSUPSCALE The time is FSR3.1 = 0.51ms, FSR4 = 0.70ms. FSR4 Costa +37% GPU; It is still a small fraction of the total frame even for this simple demonstration.August 23, 2025
ANALYSIS: If AMD can go back fsr 4 to older GPUs, it could be a stronger nvidia DLSS alternative
It cannot be denied that Nvidia is at the head both in the GPU market and in extension technology. DLSS 4 is available in all RTX GPUs and does a fantastic job by ensuring that image quality is excellent, even when its performance modes are used.
Although FSR 4 does something similar from FSR 3, the problem is that it is not enough to directly challenge DLSS 4, and FSR 4 is exclusive to the RDNA GPUs.
I am using a NVIDIA GPU, so this does not affect me at all, but it will be interesting to see how a possible support of FSR 4 will affect the RDNA 3.5 IGPU in the handpame PC.
