ISLAMABAD:
Chinese Ambassador to Islamabad Jiang Zaidong hailed Pakistan as China’s “armor brother” and praised its “steadfast and firm support” for the one-China principle, while announcing Beijing’s decision to formally establish October 25 as the Taiwan Restoration Commemoration Day.
In a statement issued in Islamabad, Ambassador Jiang said the move, adopted by the Standing Committee of the 14th National People’s Congress on Oct. 24, 2025, marked the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s return to China following Japan’s defeat in World War II.
He said Pakistan “has always upheld the authority of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758” and “strongly supported China’s position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China.”
Jiang noted that the decision to establish the commemoration day was made personally by President Xi Jinping and enacted through strict legislative procedures, reflecting “the aspirations of the Chinese people and the nation’s determination to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
He said it also “demonstrates the Chinese Communist Party’s firm determination to fulfill its historic mission and achieve complete national reunification.”
The ambassador said the restoration of Taiwan in 1945 was “an important result of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and compelling evidence of the recovery of China’s sovereignty over Taiwan.”
He noted that numerous streets, buildings and institutions in Taiwan bear the name “Restoration,” which symbolizes a shared national memory among peoples across the Taiwan Strait.
Recalling historical background, Jiang said that under the Cairo Declaration (1943) and the Potsdam Proclamation (1945), the Allied powers agreed that all territories that Japan had seized from China, including Taiwan and the Penghu Islands, “should be returned to China.”
Following Japan’s surrender, he noted, China officially resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Taiwan on October 25, 1945.
