Bhera walled city to be preserved

LAHORE:

The Punjab Archeology Department has launched a plan for the conservation and development of the historic walled city of Bhera. The initiative includes the preservation of the old walls, the restoration of the links, the improvement of urban fabric and the provision of friendly facilities for visitors while guaranteeing that the cultural identity and authenticity of Bhera remain intact.

According to a statement, the scheme reflects the prime minister of the vision Maryam Nawaz Sharif to link the conservation of heritage with cultural pride and development directed by tourism.

A former department official, Muhammad Hassan, declared that Bhera is among the oldest settlements in the subcontinent, and its conservation means reliving the living culture that once flourished within its walls.

Another former director of Archeology, Malik Maqsood, added that the restoration of link doors, mosques and residential groups would not only safeguard heritage, but also benefit the community through sustainable tourism.
