Bill Belichick’s time in North Carolina may already be coming to an end.
UNC reportedly had “possible discussions regarding exit strategies” on Tuesday, according to 247 Sports. This comes as Belichick’s Tar Heels are 2-3 in their first five games of his inaugural season as a college head coach.
North Carolina has reportedly had “preliminary conversations” about firing Belichick, which would mean a whopping $20 million buyout as part of his contract. However, 247 Sports notes that an alleged rules violation could help the program eliminate or reduce the buyout.

While the university is having the conversation, Belichick is thinking about it, too.
Belichick has “discussed buyout options with the North Carolina hierarchy,” where he has “signaled his willingness to trigger his own $1 million buyout if he can find a soft landing with another team or in the media,” according to college football writer Ollie Connolly.
HULU PULLS OFF BILL BELICHICK DOCUMENTARY PROJECT BETWEEN 2-3 START AT UNC: REPORTS
These rumors come as UNC is in the middle of its bye week, and it’s certainly not the way Belichick or anyone else envisioned his jump to college football after his illustrious NFL coaching career.
But while the product on the field hasn’t been great, there has also been some drama. Cornerbacks coach Armond Hawkins was suspended for allegedly giving extra benefits to players, including sideline passes to family members.
A lawsuit has also been filed in North Carolina alleging that the university board illegally hired Belichick.

And now, things have gotten so bad for the Tar Heels that the Hulu docuseries that would follow Belichick during his college football journey was reportedly scrapped due to a poor start. The project was only announced in August, but has since been cancelled.
Belichick’s last loss was a blowout at the hands of Clemson at home, 38-10, where the Tigers scored 28 points in the first quarter and cruised to victory from there. They held a 35-3 lead at halftime, which ultimately led to Dabo Swinney pulling some starters down the stretch.
Also with reported dysfunction on Belichick’s show is his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, whose presence was criticized even before he made his debut in a crushing 48-10 loss to TCU.
Hudson has been regularly seen on the sideline before games, speaking with Belichick and even ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips last week.

For now, Belichick will use the bye week to prepare for the Tar Heels’ next game against the California Golden Bears on October 17. But perhaps his days as a leader in Chapel Hill are coming to an end.
