Binance, Kraken frustrated social engineering attacks similar to coinbase hack

Binance and Kraken, two of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, were recently attacked in a wave of social engineering attacks similar to the one that led to a great violation of data in Coinbase.

The computer pirates approached the customer service agents with bribery offers and detailed instructions to contact the attackers through Telegram, Bloomberg reports that cite people familiar with the matter. Both exchanges managed to block attempts without losing customer data.

The exchanges faced tactics that reflect those used against Coinbase (COIN), which earlier this week he hoped to pay $ 180 million to $ 400 million in remediation costs and refunds of customers after the attackers obtained access to their personal information.

That violation led to a rescue demand for $ 20 million after the attackers managed to bribe foreign employees/contractors of Coinbase to obtain customer information. The exchange has fired the personnel involved and contacted the police.

In Binance, internal systems that include artificial intelligence bots helped detect messages related to bribery, closing conversations before they intensified. Policies that limit access to customer data unless users initiate contact also helped mitigate risk.

According to reports, Coinbase began to see unusual activity in January, and last December, rival exchanges began to warn the company about an unusual activity aimed at its largest customers.
