- Microsoft has revealed a new feature for its store in Windows 11
- It is a center full of selected or trending themes to apply to the desktop.
- There are over 400 tracks in total, including 35 new efforts.
Microsoft wants to make it easy for you to quickly customize your Windows 11 desktop, and to that end, it has introduced a curated themes section in the Microsoft Store.
Windows Central reports that Microsoft announced the move in a blog post, noting that the new ‘Themes’ center in the store is already rolling out.
Microsoft enthuses: “We’ve heard from many of you who want your PC to feel like it’s your own. Maybe you’re a gamer who wants to celebrate the latest release, a fan who enjoys seeing their beloved characters every morning, a designer looking for an artfully composed background that sparks creativity every time you log in, or someone who simply wants their desktop to feel fresh and invigorating.”
The concept is a display of curated themes (wallpapers and accent colors) based on whatever your particular preference is, and also trending themes. Find one you like and you can apply it to your Windows 11 desktop with a single click.
Microsoft tells us that there are more than 400 themes in total and that 35 of them are new. Some of the options include a Sea of Thieves theme, a collection of warships, and one that explores the world’s national parks.
Analysis: Sea of Topics
This is a great addition to the Microsoft Store to make it more useful and help you choose a topic based on your interests or what’s popular at the time (or possibly both). Previously, trying to find themes in the store was a somewhat frustrating and unnecessarily complicated task, since they were everywhere.
Obviously, Microsoft hopes this move will drive more traffic to the store, something it has been trying to do with various improvements for quite some time. That includes modernizing the interface and improving overall performance on several fronts, as well as trying to attract more developers to install their apps in the store.
If you want to browse through Microsoft’s collection of themes, keep in mind that you may not see the hub yet – it’s only just started rolling out. That said, I suppose it shouldn’t take long for most people to arrive, and the themes (or most of them) are still in the store even if you don’t have the hub; As noted, it’s about better organizing the topics, not presenting them to the store.
We can expect a further strengthening of Windows 11’s customization options in the process, as Microsoft says: “The new Themes department is just the first step in making every device a true reflection of its owner.”
Now, what are the bets that AI will come into this somewhere?
