As artificial intelligence advances on a large scale, Vince Gilligan, best known for making Breaking Bad, appears not to be a fan of it.
This is what explains the credits of his new program he directs, Pluribus: “This program was made by humans.”
“I hate AI. AI is the most expensive and energy-consuming plagiarism machine in the world,” the filmmaker tells Variety.
The director continues: “I think there’s a very high possibility that this is all a bunch of nonsense. It’s basically about a group of centibillionaires whose biggest goal in life is to become the world’s first billionaires. I think they’re selling a steam bag.”
Despite this, Vince says he is not afraid of AI as it gains a foothold in the industry. “My toaster oven doesn’t suddenly turn into Thomas Keller because it heats up delicious pizza for me.”
“But your sci-fi brain vibrates at the looming threat of the singularity, or when the AI develops a true sentience that has its own soul and therefore its own identity.”
“If they ever achieve that, then the whole slavery debate will have to be brought back to the forefront of the conversation,” Gilligan says. “These billionaires are going to want to make money from this thing that is now conscious.”
“So he’s a slave? At that point, he’s a truly sentient being, and these Silicon Valley morons are going to monetize this against their own will, right?” Vince concludes.
