Brian Tyree Henry plays a thief fearing for his life while treating with his painful past in the “Dope Thief” criminal drama, a role that the American actor said as “a return home.”
The eight -part miniseries stars Henry as Ray and the actor of “Narcos” Wagner Moura as Manny, two philadelphia friends who pose as DEA agents to steal trap houses. But when they assault an unknown rural house, they unleash a dangerous set of events that sees them from a poster and the police.
“There was a lot about (Ray) that resonated with me. I saw this man who was dealing with a generational trauma, trying to find a way to achieve it, trying to find a way of being really attended, “Henry, known by films as” Transformers One “,” Bullet Train “and” Causeway “, so he won a Oscar nomination, he told Reuters.
“It allowed me to leave many of my charges that I had been carrying … It was definitely another transition to me … to raise myself and how to deal with my emotions and deal with my abandonment, deal with my fear and deal with all those different things.
“And so, Ray was actually the first time in a long time that I felt he had returned home. He felt like a return home in a way.”
In the heart of “Dope Thief” is the long -standing friendship between Ray and Manny and how they deal with their struggles.
“The show is violent. There is a lot of violence and crime and running and you have this black and Latin man, we have seen this type of show before,” said Henry.
“But … we wanted to show tenderness between these two, friendship.”
“Dope Thief” is based on the 2009 novel by Dennis Tafoya, however, the program moves away from the book, said the creator of the Peter Craig series.
“I liked that (Tafoya) really has two novels in one. The second half is very internal, so I liked the idea of using the first half and then having a lot of space for the invention,” he said.
