Ab Hernández, a transgender athlete of High School in California who plays in female volleyball and athletics teams, remained challenging in the midst of criticism for competing against women.

Several of the opponents of Jurupa Valley this season have lost the games instead of playing a game against a team that has a biological man in the team. Chaffey High School was one of the teams that agreed to play against Jura Valley, but fell to Hernández’s team in four sets.

Hernández had no interest in giving in to criticism.

“They swore that I am like this crazy danger for society,” Hernández told CBS Los Angeles in a recent interview. “I am a normal child who goes to school, practices sports.”

Hernández’s participation in girls’ sports became an inflammation point in the effort to maintain the women’s and girls sports fair. In spring, Hernández participated in the state championships of the High School of California and won several events. The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) altered the rules so that the sport allows a girl to share the podium with Hernández.

The Trump administration filed a lawsuit against the CIF and the California Department of Education (CDE) on its gender participation policies.

“I think people simply see one thing and say ‘Oh, that’s what you are,” Hernández added.
“They don’t take the time to meet me. So, it’s a bit frustrating.”

Hernández received the strongest cheers of the night before the game against Chaffey, according to Outkick. A fan of Jurupa Valley wore a shirt with messages that supported transgender activism.

Hernández lamented the other schools that chose to lose their clashes.

“A team sport, I can’t take that,” said Hernández. “It is a team effort. My team must be willing to fight with me and that is what is needed to win a team title.”
