U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will have a presence at Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara, California, next month, but the county sheriff has made it clear he will not endorse the agency.
Santa Clara County Sheriff Bob Jonsen said Thursday that while authorities are there to serve residents and tourists coming to town for the Seattle Seahawks-New England Patriots game, the department will not work to support ICE agents in any immigration enforcement operations.

“So I urge our federal partners, if there is anything they plan to do in our community, to be transparent and communicate with their local officials so we can work to the best of our ability,” Jonsen said at a news conference.
“It was mentioned that we are not going to change our policies or protocols. We will not be working with or supporting the ICE Immigration Agency, but I want you to, again, remember, if you see us out there, we are there to help you and we will be there. Please feel free to reach out to someone in uniform while these events are going on if you are walking around trying to participate and make sure that you stay safe.”
At the same time, Jonsen said local authorities will be available to keep residents safe.
“We’re going to be here for you, side by side. So when you get off those trains, when you get off those buses, yes, there’s a good chance you’ll see someone in uniform. But if they’re not masked, if they’re wearing tan and green or blue and black, believe me, they’re there for your protection. They’re there for your protection.

“If they’re masked and they’re trying to hide their identity, then someone hasn’t contacted us because we’ve made it very clear to our officers, our workforce needs to be open and transparent and engaged with this community over the next few weeks and that’s our goal every day as well. We’ve spent decades building this community, building that trust. I’ve had conversations with many… over the last year trying to give them as much information as possible about what we know is going to happen and when it’s going to happen. and if it’s going to happen, but without that communication we can’t.”

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Undersecretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin Yoho told TMZ earlier this week that there will be agents conducting law enforcement operations.
“DHS is committed to working with our local and federal partners to ensure the Super Bowl is safe for everyone involved, as we do with all major sporting events, including the World Cup,” he said. “Our mission remains unchanged.”
DHS adviser Corey Lewandowski said in October that enforcement is a “presidential directive” and will not be suspended during the Super Bowl.
“There is no place where safe haven can be provided to people who are in this country illegally,” Lewandowski said on “The Benny Show” podcast. “Not in the Super Bowl or anywhere else. We will find you and we will deport you. That is a very real situation.”
