A new poll found that 52% of Americans want Congress to impeach President Trump now.
The survey conducted by the firm of veteran progressive pollster Celinda Lake recorded 790 voters. The survey results showed that 52% of people are in favor of impeachment, while 40% are opposed.
The survey focused on the impeachment for two particular reasons: the war against Iran waged by Trump and his deployment of violent ICE agents in American cities. Jurists believe that both violate the Constitution.
In the case of Democrats, 84% support impeachment, while 94% strongly support it.
Among Republicans, 81% do not support impeachment, but 14% do. As for independents, 55% support impeachment, while 34% oppose it.
But the question remains: Can Trump really be impeached? A simple majority in the House is needed for impeachment. But to achieve a conviction, a two-thirds vote is needed in the Republican-controlled Senate, a very high bar.
For now, the votes are not on either side of the Capitol. Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, made two attempts over the past year to impeach Trump through privilege resolutions, both of which were unsuccessful.
The main question is whether public pressure will succeed when legal reasoning has failed to sway Congress.
