Microsoft has hurried to an emergency solution for a problem caused by the most recent update of Windows 11 (and Windows 10), which has broken the characteristics of restoration and recovery that are designed to rescue their PC when you meet serious problems.
Bleeping Computer saw for Microsoft’s announcement of the launch of the solution that has been delivered as an update of ‘outside the band’, which means that it is an accumulated update that has been implemented outside the usual moment.
It is the resolution of an error that affects the Powers of Restart of Windows 11 (versions 23h2 and 22h2) and Windows 10 (22h2), which was introduced with the August updates that arrived for these operating systems last week. The cure is full of cumulative updates that are the same as the original August patches, except for having the solution.
If you have installed the Augusto of Microsoft’s patch and is running one of the Windows affected versions, you must install this new update at the top. It is labeled as KB5066189 for Windows 11 and KB5066188 for Windows 10, and can find it verifying updates on the Windows update panel. Keep in mind that it will appear in optional updates.
If the August patch has not yet installed, you should simply apply this (from optional updates).
ANALYSIS: The path to recovery leads to a dead end
I must make it clear that this affects all versions of Windows 10 and 11 that are on support, except for the latest version of Windows 11, 24h2. It is rare that those in Windows 11 24h2 are not beaten by an error: those people have been suffering more since the new version of the Microsoft desktop operating system came out.
As for the details of what the error in question is broken, it is the ability to restart the PC, which allows you to return to its original state, essentially a reinstallation of Windows 11, or restore and maintain your personal data (but not applications or configurations). A second option to ‘solve problems with Windows Update’ is also affected, which is essentially the same as the last restart option, where it maintains its personal files, but this also remains in applications and configurations, so it only reinstates the Windows system.
Due to the failure, all these processes will fail, which will obviously leave you a lot in the shake when it comes to recovering from a problem. You cannot get anywhere, although the error itself will not cause more detriment of the condition of your PC. The restart or recovery procedure will simply fall.
These are not characteristics that you will need to use frequently, hopefully, so the effect of this error may not have felt so widely (what is probably why the failure did not come to light immediately). Even so, it will be quite annoying if you need a restart or repair for your Windows 11 or 10 PC, since obviously things are not going well with the operating system if you use such measures, hence Microsoft hastened to eliminate this solution.
