Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon was the last NFL coach to be seen out the door on Black Monday, being fired a day after the team suffered its ninth consecutive loss of the season.

The move was announced through the team’s website after the Cardinals ended the season with a 37-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

“Jonathan is a very intelligent, motivated, enthusiastic, intelligent and incredible coach,” Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said during a news conference Monday.

“It made us better, but I think, as everyone knows, this is a win-loss league. The wins and losses speak for themselves, especially this year. We felt like we were going in the wrong direction and we needed to change course.”

Gannon, 43, spoke briefly to the media after the game and had little to elaborate after the Cardinals finished with a 3-14 record.

“It’s not very good,” he said when asked to sum up the season. “A lot of adversity, but growth will happen.”

“My best memory? My best memory hasn’t happened,” he continued. “It will be the growth that occurs this year. That’s a good question.”

Gannon declined to speculate on his future, telling reporters that Monday would be “the same 24 hours” as any Monday after failing to make the playoffs. But that was not the case.

His firing comes after three seasons with the organization, but the 2024 NFL season marked the worst for Gannon by far.

The Cardinals came out flying with two straight wins, but injuries to stars like Kyler Murray and James Conner, combined with careless, self-inflicted mistakes (particularly Emari Demercado’s premature celebration and goal-line fumble) quickly ended any realistic playoff hopes.

Gannon even made his own mistake on the sideline when the NFL fined him $100,000 for appearing to get into an altercation with Demercado after he dropped the ball.

Gannon leaves the organization with a 15-36 record.
