The Canadian Football League announced important changes in the field of play in the next two years.

CFL teams can start closer to the final areas of their opponents and the turn “encourages the most aggressive game in the third Down with crimes that begin with 10 yards closer to the final area and the opponent’s field goals only 5 yards beyond, despite the objectives changed,” according to the League. The width of 65 yards of the field will continue to be the same.
The CFL said it will still have the largest final area of any professional football league and “retains the importance of the kick game.”
The objectives will move towards the back of the annotation zone in the hope of eliminating obstructions for the teams trying to write down a touchdown. The League said it will be better for the presentation of TV and for stadium fans.
These three changes will be implemented in 2027.

CFL changes to the rogue will be implemented next season. The rogue is a score of a point awarded in certain plays in the League. From 2026, only one point is awarded when a returner “cannot take a clearing, field goal or start of the score zone” or a return is given a knee. The League will no longer grant a point for the lost field goals that extend from the posts or in clearings or kicks that cross the back or sides of the annotation zone without being touched.
The League will also move team banks to the opposite sides in the field, as well as a 35 -second game watch that begins once the previous play ends. Those rules will begin in 2026.
The CFL said the league will continue to be “very Canadian” despite the next changes.
“These changes are trying to increase entertainment, while supporting and maintaining the traditions of our game, such as Three Downs, 12 players in the field, the wiggle and much more. These changes make our game more exciting and more entertaining,” said the CFL.
“The League has seen changes in the rules before. Before 1929, throwing the ball forward was illegal, imagine when the League altered that rule. At one time, the Division this used to play two games with the total score that determined the winner, while the West division played a series of the best three, imagine that format today.

“The CFL, like any other successful and long data league, has continually evolved and innovated and innovated, and will continue to do so to benefit fans and strengthen the future of Canadian football.”
The CFL said no more important changes are planned.
