- OpenAI wants people to use group chats with ChatGPT to plan and make decisions
ChatGPT is no longer an individual partner now that OpenAI has launched the AI chatbot’s new group chats feature globally. Up to twenty people can join ChatGPT and collaborate in the same conversation. It’s available now online and through the ChatGPT app for anyone following a limited pilot.
The release introduces new behaviors, tools, and privacy rules that allow ChatGPT to participate in a group conversation without taking control. AI waits, watches, and intervenes only when the context requires it or when someone explicitly tags it. Conversations remain separate from private chats and personal memory never leaks into group spaces.
And it has pretty good privacy settings. ChatGPT asks you to set up a simple profile so that you don’t appear as “Anonymous Icon #6.” Everything that is in the group stays in the group. Your personal ChatGPT memory does not appear and nothing from the group becomes part of your memory later. Children who participate automatically activate additional safety measures, tightening content filters for the entire chat. And the group creator is still the only one who can’t be removed unless he decides to leave.
For anyone who’s ever been a part of group texts, Slack channels, or other communication conglomerates, a little skepticism is understandable. The ability of an AI to foster efficient decision-making and the amicable resolution of disagreements is itself debatable. A couple of experiments with ChatGPT as a de facto project manager showed that AI could be useful in providing facts supporting both sides of a debate.
In a discussion about the best breakfast restaurants in the area, ChatGPT chimed in when questions arose, but was otherwise pretty quiet. He provided details but did nothing to contradict our opinions.
ChatGPT became much more talkative during a semi-simulated debate about which movie to watch on a rainy night. It offered genre suggestions and helped narrow them down based on what people said they wanted to see.
He also went on a tangent about what snacks to make and remembered what we were discussing about the movie when the conversation turned to it. Typically, this type of group decision involves too many opinions, too little agreement, and at least one person saying, “I don’t care, just pick something.” ChatGPT became a neutral third party.
AI Group Chat
That said, the experience is not magical. Group chats rely heavily on humans knowing when to tag the AI and when to let the conversation flow. If two people start arguing about where to have dinner, ChatGPT won’t intervene unless someone includes it in the conversation. That restriction is intentional and prevents the experience from becoming “AI with spectators.”
ChatGPT can respond with emojis, reference profile images, and even generate custom images that include group members if requested. It makes the AI feel more like a participant and less like a floating answer box. And because the system uses GPT-5.1 Auto, the model adapts to the group’s needs in terms of the complexity of the answers.
Using group chats doesn’t drastically change what ChatGPT can do, but it could change how and when you use it. The presence of the AI gives the group a sort of built-in boost. The first wave of AI assistants helped people work faster. Apparently the next wave will help groups work together.
And in a world where planning anything with more than two people usually feels like herding cats through an obstacle course, adding a patient, knowledgeable assistant to the chat may be one of the most genuinely useful steps in AI yet.
