- OpenAI makes ChatGPT Go free for 12 months in India only
- The offer is open to new and existing users.
- Other countries may get ChatGPT Go for free in the future
For a limited period, OpenAI has made ChatGPT Go, its lightweight, low-cost alternative to ChatGPT Plus, completely free for 12 months in India only.
ChatGPT Go is a subscription service designed to offer the most popular features of ChatGPT Plus at a more affordable price. ChatGPT Go includes expanded access to GPT-5, image generation, file uploads, and advanced data analysis. You also get longer memory for more personalized responses and access to custom projects, tasks, and GPTs.
While it is better than the free version of ChatGPT, ChatGPT Go differs from Plus in the amount of access you get to premium features, which is less. Additionally, it also gives you expanded access to legacy models like ChatGPT-4o and advanced tools like Deep Research, Agent mode, and Sora video creation.
Countries that have access to ChatGPT Go are generally considered low-income countries, but there are some notable curiosities on the list, such as Norway and Spain, for example.
Why India?
Even if you’re in a country that doesn’t have access to ChatGPT Go, like the US or UK, OpenAI’s decision to make the service available for free for a year in India is still important as it could be a sign of what’s to come elsewhere.
You might be wondering why OpenAI chose India for this experiment. India is often used as a testbed for technology launches due to its huge population. It is also one of the largest mobile markets, with a large proportion of its population on Android, which aligns with OpenAI’s product.
It also shows that OpenAI is willing to experiment with aggressive (or in this case, zero) pricing in an effort to outperform its competitors. If the promotion is successful, it could lead to a similar strategy being employed elsewhere.
In India, OpenAI competes with Google’s Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude and local models like Kruti. Massively increasing ChatGPT’s user base through free accounts could not only influence how the tool evolves toward user behaviors outside the US, but could also increase its presence in Asia.
Get it while you can
The ChatGPT Go promotion is now available to redeem through the ChatGPT website or the Google Play store, and will be available next week in the Apple App Store.
If you’re in India, we recommend accepting the offer as soon as possible, as OpenAI says it can end the deal “at any time without notice.”
The offer extends to current and new subscribers. Another message from OpenAI reads: “If you are currently a ChatGPT Go subscriber on web or Android through the Google Play store, please do not cancel your subscription. We may automatically redeem the promotion later this week.”
