Chris Columbus Reveals the Truth Behind Macaulay Culkin’s Iconic ‘Home Alone’ Scene

He alone at home Director Chris Columbus revealed that Macaulay Culkin’s iconic aftershave scene was a “complete accident.”

In a recent talk with The Hollywood Reporter in your Awards talk podcast, the Academy AwardThe nominated filmmaker recalled the famous scene from his Christmas movie, where Kevin McCallister put his hands on Culkin’s face.

“The aftershave thing was in the script. It was partly an accident,” Columbus recalled. “He was supposed to put on aftershave, put his hands up to his face and immediately pull them away and then scream. That was the direction I gave it to him on the first take and he kept his hands there. For some reason, he didn’t do it. HE”.

“Maybe he was nervous. He just wouldn’t keep his hands off his cheeks and that made us all laugh,” the 66-year-old director continued. “We kept it in the first trailer of the movie and the audience loved it. So it was a complete accident.”

While explaining, Colón noted that “it was Macaulay” who made it possible. “And again, I don’t even know if he remembers why he did that, but he certainly didn’t; I can’t take credit for giving him that direction,” he added.
