- Claude has reached number one on the US Apple App Store chart.
- It is related to anger over ChatGPT’s deal with the US military.
- Claude continues to be used within various US government agencies.
AI chatbot Claude appears to be gaining a substantial number of new users in the wake of developer Anthropic’s decision to walk away from a deal with the US military: the app has now reached number one on Apple’s US App Store chart.
As reported by TechCrunch and others, Claude’s rise in popularity is related to Anthropic’s announcement late last week that it had failed to reach a deal to supply AI services to the US Department of War (DoW), citing a lack of safeguards related to mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons as the main obstacle.
ChatGPT developer OpenAI apparently had fewer qualms about the DoW deal and jumped in to replace Anthropic. According to OpenAI, US authorities gave assurances that “security principles” around mass surveillance and autonomous weapons would be respected in the future.
However, ChatGPT users are not convinced. ChatGPT Reddit is filled with reports of users abandoning the AI application due to the “dark direction” OpenAI is heading, and it seems Claude is the alternative that many are turning to as well.
still in use
Although Anthropic has refused to sign a new agreement with the War Department, Claude is widely used across all departments of the US government, something President Donald Trump wants to see change in light of recent disagreements over safety and security.
In a social media post (via The Guardian), Trump called Anthropic “a radical left-wing AI company run by people who have no idea what the real world is about.” He went on to request that all government agencies stop using Claude effective immediately, although such a quick change does not seem feasible.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, the US military operation we have seen in Iran over the past few days has been aided by Anthropic’s AI. Claude is apparently still widely used by the White House and its security services, including the US Central Command in the Middle East.
According to the WSJ, a complete switch to ChatGPT will take months. Meanwhile, many everyday consumers who don’t work for the US government are moving in the opposite direction when it comes to AI tools.
