Lahore: Punjab Prime Minister Maryam Nawaz visited the Ravi River on Shahdara on Thursday, addressed a boat to inspect the situation of the flood more closely.

Later, speaking with the media after visiting the situation of the flood in Shahdara, he said that the province has experienced severe and continuous rains in recent weeks, which leads to dangerous levels of water in the three main rivers.

“I’ve never seen so much water in the Ravi River. Our rivers were under immense pressure. If we had [Punjab govt] Not prepared on time, the damage could have been catastrophic. “

He also praised the efforts of local administration and rescue teams, saying that lives were not lost due to administrative negligence.

He added that more than 50,000 people and a large number of cattle have successfully relocated in safer areas.

Reiterating his government’s commitment to relief and recovery, Punjab prime minister said his government would reach all affected individuals and guarantee compensation for losses.

“Water is a blessing, but without adequate storage systems and drainage planning, we are vulnerable … I have ordered all departments that present specific programs on how we can store and manage floods in the future,” he added.

12 dead on Punjab floods

Meanwhile, Punjab main minister Marriyum Aurengzeb said at least 12 people have lost their lives due to the situation of flooding in progress in the province.

Speaking with the media, he said that no deaths occur due to negligence on the part of the Punjab government or rescue agencies, stating that rescue operations, particularly through boats, are actively underway.

In addition, he said that monitoring efforts are ongoing, and around six to seven people have been rescued from the debris.

“Foods are being provided in the Socorro camps, and almost 200,000 cattle have moved to safe places with their owners. Citizens are urged to avoid areas affected by floods and not approach the water channels for selfies or photos,” he added.

The Punjab main minister praised the tireless rescue efforts and administrative teams, stating that a lot of personnel have worked for three or five days without sleep.

He also recognized the support of the media and the presence of elected officials and ministers in the affected areas.
