LAHORE:

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has stated that the government will not tolerate any attempt to destabilize national security or sow discord under the pretext of religion, and emphasized that religious scholars have the responsibility to prevent sectarian hatred and division in the society.

Addressing the launching ceremony of the Chief Minister’s Honorary Card for Imams, he paid tribute to religious leaders as pillars of society and standard bearers of faith. “I consider it an honor to have the opportunity to serve the imams through this fee initiative,” he said, noting that people turn to religious scholars for guidance in times of both joy and grief.

The prime minister said that initially a decision had been taken to pay Rs 15,000 to prayer leaders, but PML-N leader Mian Nawaz Sharif had directed him to increase the amount to Rs 25,000 per month.

“It is unfortunate that in 2026, many mosque imams will be offered only Rs 5,000. Like ordinary citizens, imams also face essential expenses, and meeting daily costs with such meager income is extremely difficult,” he observed.

He revealed that Punjab has approximately 80,000 mosques, and a positive response of 70,000 was received during registration. He announced that this month’s payments will be made through payment orders, while regular digital payments via card will begin from next month. “The goal of digital payments through cards is transparency and convenience,” he explained, calling on mosque management committees to continue their regular support along with the government stipend.

The prime minister emphasized that the government remains available to help imams facing difficulties related to illness, children’s education costs or any other challenges. He highlighted the need for close coordination between the government and religious scholars, stating that their advice and support are essential to improve governance.

CM Maryam stated that Pakistan, the only country founded in the name of Islam, must ensure that religious minorities live without fear. “Should people of other religions live in constant fear that someone could burn down their houses at any moment?” she asked.

The Prime Minister warned that certain elements had constantly promoted discord in the name of religion. “Some people continue to promote sectarianism on religious pretexts. Society has been torn apart mercilessly, with police and Rangers personnel martyred and beaten. Young law enforcement officers are ready to protect their lives and property, but they were attacked,” he said.

Referring to the recent incidents of violence, he condemned the destruction of public property including Suthra Punjab vehicles, closure of businesses and attacks on homes.
