NASA’s first lunar trip in decades grabbed the spotlight at a softball game in Florida on Wednesday night, as players from both teams stood in awe as four astronauts embarked on a trip around the moon.

Florida Gators utility player Madison Walker pointed to the sky, and Stetson University freshman Gaby Bauer stood in awe at home plate as the Artemis II moon rocket lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center just before 7 p.m.

The game at Patricia Wilson Field in DeLand, Florida, was just an hour from the launch site, but the rocket could still be seen making its way through the sky on a journey that was expected to last about 10 days.

After the excitement died down, seventh-seeded Florida defeated its in-state rival 8-2, marking the Gators’ 14th consecutive victory over Stetson dating back to 2006.

Meanwhile, the historic lunar journey captivated most of the country this Wednesday.

Three Americans and one Canadian took off from the Kennedy Space Center toward the Moon, about 400,000 miles away. The crew will sail past the moon another 4,000 miles before making a U-turn and returning home.
